Deep Clean
Written by Jane Trimarco
I’ve been thinking about how we deep clean – as Christians.
I’m sure you have all done a deep clean in your houses. Sorting through drawers, getting rid of clothes that don’t fit any more, or you haven’t worn all year! Making piles of things to take to the charity shop, then another pile to the rubbish tip. Finally throwing away those holey socks that you have been hanging on to.
I love a good clean and finding a place for everything and giving things away. I can relax in the evening if I can see a heap of things in a corner! Anyone else!?
I’ve noticed that over the years that my surroundings affect me more than I thought. Sometimes we can neglect the areas of our life that just fit into the category “that’s the way it is” or “that’s never going to change”. It’s like we’ve resigned ourselves to the fact that it’s just the way it is always going to be.
But the state of your mind and your wellbeing doesn’t have to stay that way.
Romans 12 verse 1 says:
Take your everyday ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going to work, and walking around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. (The Message)
The Bible calls the process the ‘renewing’ of our minds. Think of it as a deep clean of our minds. A big old sort out! And just like sorting out that kitchen drawer you haven’t touched in years, it can be a terrifying thought to start; but with the help of the Holy Spirit you can totally do it!
Romans 12 verse 2 says:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Worship is a weapon and an incredible tool to help clear our minds. It switches the focus away from us and straight to God. Make worship a lifestyle.
I find that worshipping throughout the day helps me, and God wants us to sing His praises! So, let’s sing around the house, sing whilst doing the dishes, sing as you walk to work, sing in the car. God loves to hear your voice!
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6)
Even if it is a little at a time – it’s a process that will last a lifetime. Renew your mind. Clean that space, clear the clutter, chuck out the junk, make room for the Truth. Organise that drawer in the back of your head. Fill your thoughts with God’s word. Speak the truth out loud. Worship Him. Start that deep clean.
