The Great Carer
Written by Joshua Field
One of the many privileges we have as Christians is that we are Jesus’ sheep.
I read recently “Sheep aren’t clever at all. They’re foolish.” So, it isn’t necessarily great news to be a sheep, but it’s astonishingly wonderful to be Jesus’ sheep. Not because of what we, the sheep, are like, but rather because of what He, the Good Shepherd, is like! John 10:27 says “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me!” We can hear the voice of the one who spoke the stars into existence (Psalm 33:6). Wowzer!
I am not a professional carer. However, I do have the privilege of working alongside those who do care. I see glimpses of the hard work that caring well for someone is. Particularly when that person maybe someone whom you have only just met.
The Good Shepherd knows, and cares for you. He knows the gifts and strengths you have. He knows your weaknesses and failures. He knows what you need better than we do. And He is completely able to provide. He loves His sheep and will provide everything you need to be the carer that he has called you to be!
John 10:16 says: “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.” All the people we care for are also precious to our Shepherd because they are made in His image. It’s wonderful to think that some of them are also His sheep. They can hear His voice too!
I was so struck by the story shared at one of our Christians in Care prayer meetings of a carer who was looking after someone who tended to be non-verbal in communication. As the carer was completing their practical tasks, they were also silently praying for the person. When she had finished her tasks the person they were caring for asked ‘who are you talking to’? Wow! The carer explained she was praying for him! He expressed his gratitude and asked her to continue! I wonder if this is just one example of many of how God makes His voice audible through our care, even when we don’t know He’s doing it!
The One who spoke the stars into existence cannot be prevented from speaking with His sheep, even those who may struggle to communicate, to have their voice heard or feel their value.
Our Shepherd is the ultimate carer! As we care, particularly when its hard and difficult, I am convinced that others will hear His voice.
